A low-pressure system accompanied by a frontal boundary is currently moving eastward across the eastern United States, driven by the southward descent of an upper-level cold trough. Lightning has been observed across a wide area from the East Coast to the Southeast, and there is potential for severe weather phenomena near the front, including lightning strikes, brief heavy rainfall, strong wind gusts, and tornadoes.
Meteorological Mechanism
The primary driver of the current severe weather is the passage of a developed low-pressure system and its associated frontal boundary. Warm, moist air flowing into the surface layer toward the front, combined with the temperature contrast of the upper-level cold trough, has created a highly unstable atmospheric environment.
- Passage of Low-Pressure System and Front: A developed low-pressure system and its associated front are moving through the eastern United States, serving as the direct trigger for the widespread severe weather conditions.
- Inflow of Low-Level Warm, Moist Air: During summer, warm and moist air from the south readily flows into the eastern United States. High-humidity air with dewpoint temperatures reaching 20–24°C is being widely supplied toward the front.
- Descent of Upper-Level Cold Air: The intrusion of a cold trough above this warm, moist air layer is rapidly increasing atmospheric instability, creating favorable conditions for the rapid development of cumulonimbus clouds.
Outlook
The front has already passed through the northeastern areas including New York and Washington D.C., and conditions are expected to gradually improve during the daytime local time of July 22.
Meanwhile, the southeastern region south of Atlanta faces the potentially most dangerous period from the afternoon of July 22 through July 23.
