Blocking High Keeps Hot Weather Over the Iberian Peninsula

Blocking High Keeps Hot Weather Over the Iberian Peninsula

Spain's national meteorological agency, AEMET, issued a weather outlook on Thursday, July 16, forecasting a prolonged period of very high temperatures across the Iberian Peninsula.

What's Driving the Heat

A blocking high has become established over the Iberian Peninsula as the westerly flow (jet stream) undergoes a pronounced meander. Within the high-pressure system, sustained subsidence is causing adiabatic warming, leading to rising temperatures.

Meanwhile, a low-pressure system is expected to develop and further deepen west of the peninsula through the weekend. This evolving synoptic pattern is forecast to further reinforce the blocking regime, allowing the heat to intensify into next week.

Weekend Maximum Temperature Forecast — Key Airports

Madrid Barajas International Airport (LEMD / MAD)

  • Saturday, July 18: 37°C (99°F)
  • Sunday, July 19: 37°C (99°F)

Barcelona El Prat International Airport (LEBL / BCN)

  • Saturday, July 18: 30°C (86°F)
  • Sunday, July 19: 30°C (86°F)

Outlook

Intense sunshine combined with sustained subsidence will drive a gradual temperature climb from the weekend into early next week, with parts of central and southern Spain forecast to reach particularly extreme levels.
