As of 0000 UTC on September 7, Hurricane LOWELL in the Pacific Ocean was centered approximately 900 km southwest of Honolulu (15.4°N, 163.7°W). The hurricane is maintaining its intensity with maximum sustained winds of 95 kt (approx. 49 m/s) and has been moving northward at 8 kt over the past six hours.
Outlook
LOWELL is forecast to track north to north-northeast from September 7 through September 8, passing to the west of the Hawaiian Islands. It is then expected to turn northwest to west-northwest and gradually weaken. Maximum sustained winds are anticipated to decline from the current 95 kt to 50 kt by September 10, and further down to 35 kt by September 12.
Forecast for Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (PHNL/HNL)
At Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (PHNL/HNL), southeasterly winds are forecast to strengthen between approximately 0600 and 1500 UTC on September 8, with sustained winds of 25–26 kt and peak gusts reaching 37–40 kt. In addition, between 0900 and 1200 UTC, the wind direction is expected to shift from 120° to 150–160°. Because the crosswind component on RWY 08/26 could exceed 20 kt, careful attention to strong crosswinds will be required. Winds are subsequently forecast to veer southerly and gradually diminish. While light rain (LGT) is expected to persist, no thunderstorms are anticipated.
