Current Status

According to information issued by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) at 09:45 JST on October 19, 2026, Typhoon CHAMPI (No. 30)—a large and very strong system—was located east of the Philippines (14.0°N, 139.3°E) as of 09:00 JST on October 19, moving west-northwest at 11 knots. It has a central pressure of 950 hPa, maximum sustained winds near the center of 95 knots, and peak gusts of 135 knots.

Intensity Forecast

Typhoon CHAMPI is forecast to maintain its very strong intensity through October 20, with a central pressure of around 935 hPa, maximum sustained winds near the center of 100 knots, and peak gusts reaching 140 knots.

It is expected to intensify further, reaching violent strength on October 21 with a central pressure of 920 hPa, maximum sustained winds near the center of 105 knots, and peak gusts of 150 knots.

By October 23, the typhoon is forecast to weaken slightly while remaining a very strong system. Because it is accompanied by destructive winds, close attention should be paid to future developments.

Track Outlook

Typhoon CHAMPI is forecast to track northwestward across the waters east of the Philippines through October 20. Continuing on a northwestward trajectory, it is expected to pass near the Sakishima Islands between October 23 and the morning of October 24.

As the typhoon approaches, heavy rain, destructive winds, and high waves could affect the Sakishima Islands. It is then expected to approach the vicinity of Taiwan. Depending on its actual track, strong winds, torrential rainfall, and rough seas may also impact areas around Taiwan.

Furthermore, flight operations across surrounding regions could experience disruptions as the storm nears. Aviation stakeholders and travelers are advised to monitor the latest general weather and aviation weather advisories closely.
