Current Status of Typhoon Choi-wan
According to information issued by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) at 10:05 JST on October 1, 2026, Typhoon Choi-wan was located over the Mariana Islands (16.4°N, 147.8°E) as of 09:00 JST on October 1, tracking westward at 14 knots. The central atmospheric pressure is 998 hPa, with maximum sustained winds of 35 knots and maximum instantaneous wind gusts reaching 50 knots near its center.
Projected Track and Intensity
Typhoon Choi-wan is expected to track westward while intensifying over the ocean east of the Mariana Islands. After passing north of the Northern Mariana Islands, it is forecast to recurve northward. Operations in Guam and Saipan should exercise caution regarding wind and rainfall impacts associated with the approaching storm.
Around October 5, Choi-wan is projected to track east of the Ogasawara Islands at violent intensity. Beyond the immediate forecast period, the system will likely curve gradually eastward and track off the Pacific coast of eastern Japan. High winds and rough seas are highly probable across the Ogasawara area.
Forecast for Saipan International Airport (PGSN / SPN)
Beginning around 05:00 UTC on October 1, surface winds are expected to broadly exceed 20 knots, with mean sustained wind speeds exceeding 30 knots from around 14:00 UTC on the same day. Although mean wind speeds are forecast to decrease below 30 knots after 06:00 UTC on October 3, wind speeds exceeding 25 knots are anticipated to persist. Strong wind conditions will likely continue through October 5.
Regarding rainfall, moderate rain is expected from the daytime through the nighttime of October 1 and into the early morning of October 2. While precipitation is anticipated to taper off from the daytime of October 2 onward—transitioning primarily to light rain—intermittent moderate rainfall remains possible.
