Heat Wave Grips the Central and Eastern U.S., Bringing 100°F Highs to Some Major Airports

Overview

As of 06Z on July 15, an upper-level cold vortex is present over eastern Canada, while an upper-level ridge extends across the north-central United States into central Canada. As a series of troughs passes through the western flank of the cold vortex through the weekend, the ridge is expected to gradually retreat westward. As a result, elevated temperatures are likely to persist across the eastern United States through around July 17, and across central regions through the weekend.

Meteorological Background

The primary driver of this heat wave is a powerful upper-level high-pressure ridge maintaining a persistent heat dome over the region. Descending air undergoes adiabatic compression heating beneath the ridge, while clear skies maximize solar radiation at the surface — creating a self-reinforcing cycle that has produced exceptionally rare heat for mid-July.

Outlook

Around July 17–18, a frontal passage is expected to bring cooler temperatures to the Northeast, though the associated risk of thunderstorms, strong winds, and reduced visibility means that weather hazards will replace heat concerns during this transition period. In Chicago, temperatures are forecast to remain near 86°F through the weekend, with lingering heat wave impacts.
